It rained on us when we arrived, a not promising sign if you only had an extended weekend at Siargao. We got there a few minutes to an hour of flight from Cebu City, and you could still smell a night out at Larsians from Gay | Pinay Travel Junkie, and Melo | Out of Town Blog arriving the day before; Singapore from Ron Flip’n Travels who flew in at dawn; and Iligan on me arriving that morning before flying together to Siargao — if not for remnants of fear from the turbulent flight, four attempted landing, and failed assuring voice from the aircraft captain getting there, that is.

Screeching tires echoes the sound of successful landing, and we dropped our packs at the open reception area at Buddha’s Surf Resort with welcome drinks of fresh coconut juice laughing at our earlier experience. Rain beat on the packed white sand pathways, as we waited for it to stop before heading to our rooms with talks of travel interrupted with laughter, and jokes I was still trying to get used to. When everyone was already familiar with each other, I was the one left familiar with only but their online personalities, and in what briefest interactions we had, if there was any. Uhm, but ofcourse, there was.

Buddha’s Surf Resort is located at General Luna, Siargao between the town proper, and the famous Cloud 9 surf break. A prearranged airport shuttle at 300PhP/pax for a 45 minute ride to the resort is recommended for convenience, and comfort. Though it only offers, as of this writing, five rooms for accommodation, I found it exclusive, private, and comforting enough to get familiar with other guests, and staff as well. We were welcomed by manager Chris, and showed, and ushered to our rooms by the very chatty Marlo.

ROOMS.

While Gay, and her family stayed at the Superior Room, Ron, Melo and I stayed at the Family Room of two adjoining rooms, and air conditioning units; with three double beds, and interiors of different shades of grey, and blue. All rooms have hot/cold shower; flat screen TV with cable; private balcony with deck chairs; and free Wi-Fi.

The room rates are not bad for the rooms, amenities, and service you get. I got to finish some work while I was there thanks to fast internet connection which is second on my list, next to good rooms ofcourse. If you’re trying to save on expenses, you can always travel as a couple, or a group to help you split your expenses. The plan was to stay there for first two nights but decided to extended our stay for the last night since we’ve already grown temporary attachment to our rest space, and the staff. When asked of our plans, resort owner offered to extend his generosity to us for the third night as well.

FOOD, AND BREAKFAST DIARIES

My social media updates during that trip was probably of their breakfast meals! At the open space restaurant, and bar offers not only hearty, and of generous proportion breakfast meals, the staff can also whip up delectable meals for lunch, and dinner. My fave would have to be the chicken curry which probably was a staple on every meal we had there. Food served is not only limited to it’s menu, you can request from Filipino dishes to traditional Filipino feast — lechon baboy (pig roast) included!

SURFING, AND MORE.

Managed, and run by people who probably spent significant numbers of hours with the waves, Buddha’s Surf Resort gives you a true local surfing experience. The resort offers surfing lessons, island hopping tours, stand up paddle boarding, aside from within the resort activities like yoga, volleyball, and slacklining among others. Resident surf instructor Marlo is not only the guy to go to for surfing lessons, he is also the best guy to ask on tidal, and weather conditions, and what activities to do for the day.

Surfing Lessons: 550PhP/Hour
Stand Up Paddle Boarding Lessons: 600PHP/hour (instructor with equipment)
Stand Up Paddle Boarding Rental: 700PHP/day; 300PHP/hour
Island Hopping (3 Islands): 700PhP/pax; lunch included

I wish I tried Stand Up Paddling though, for someone who’s postural balance-challenged, I would’ve disturbed calm waters falling off the board to get to a standing position after a hundreds of tries. But I would’ve died tried still.

Buddha’s Surf Resort is not only ideal for surfers but also for non-surfer guests, like us, with it’s accommodating staff ready in helping plan out how to get the best of the Siargao experience. It is a great place to stay if you’re planning to travel to Siargao Island but booking ahead is recommended.  I’d, definitely, stay here again, and hopefully get to try SUP!

Making friends, and meeting acquaintances with common interest in travel, — it reminded me, yet again, that travelers are wandering souls that either attract each other, or never get fateful enough to bump into each other at all.
